[Weekly Calm] the bodyguard at the door

June 28, 2026
You only ever get angry about something you care about.
“"I have never known an angry person who did not care." Junpo”

A soft truth you might appreciate today

Anger is almost always the second feeling, not the first.

Something softer always gets there before it. We just do not see the soft thing, because the bodyguard is loud and quick and certain, and the hurt underneath is quiet. Meet the anger and it fights you. Ask what it is guarding, and it has nowhere to go.

That is the whole turn this week. The anger is not the enemy. It is pointing at something that matters to you.

A simple practice for this week

Next time the heat rises, before you do anything with it, ask yourself one quiet question. Not who is to blame. Just, what am I really trying to protect.

And if it is someone else who is angry at you, try the same from the other side. Say to them, I can see you care, tell me why it matters. Then close your mouth and listen. Watch the heat drain out of the room.

A reflective question

The last time you lost your temper, what was the soft thing the anger was standing in front of?

A simple intention for the week

This week, I will ask what my anger is guarding before I act on it.

A personal note

Last night I got teasy with my parents. We did not fall out, but we were both frustrated, both digging in, both sure we were the one in the right. You're wrong and I'm right, on a loop.

What was really going on, though, was simpler. I did not feel heard. I wanted them to give me a bit of credit for what I know. That was the soft thing under my irritation. And here is the part I am less proud of. While I was busy wanting to be heard, I was not doing the same for them.

That is anger for you. It convinces you the problem is out there, in the other person, when the thing it is guarding is right here in your own chest.

I teach this stuff and I still get it wrong. That is not a failure, it is just being a human with a human nervous system. The practice was never to stop getting angry. It is to catch it half a second sooner. To find the small gap between the spark and the fire, and step into it. Some nights I manage it. Last night I did not, not really. But I saw it afterwards, and I will see it a touch sooner next time.

My teacher Junpo used to say, your angst is your liberation. The tight angry knot is exactly the place the freedom is hiding.

Practice with me

Two to sit beside this week:

Stillness in the Storms 171, What Your Anger Is Really Saying. Anger as a bodyguard, what it guards, and the one question that takes the heat out of almost any row. Listen here.

Inner Peace Meditations, A Lighter Start to the Day. Somethingto ease you into the morning when the day already feels heavy. Listen here.

Until next week

Be gentle with yourself this week. The heat will rise again. You can always pause, and ask what it is you are really trying to protect.

Much love, Steven
